Sailing date: May 2009 Pros: Organization of schedule, crew members, comfort of beds Cons: Second-hand smoke This was my first cruise so I was of course enthralled by the whole experience. The staff/crew were 99.9 % wonderful. I was surprised to learn that the ship docks at 9 a.m. on Sat. in Venice and takes off again at 6 p.m. with a whole new set of people. The staff are to be lavishly praised for their ability to keep up their energy and professionalism. I was very pleased that 2,200 people could be managed so well. We loved all of our excursions and felt the transition from ship to shore was seamless, as was the initial embarkation of the ship and final disembarkation. Our luggage was easy to find when we disembarked. The food was generally very good, some of it excellent, some of it so-so. The waiters and restaurant staff work very hard---I hope they are well- compensated by Costa, as do the cabin stewards. Ours was very personable and professional. The ship was clean and except for the 2nd hand smoke I loved the experience. I would probably seek out a cruise line with stricter smoking policies next time but if that is not an issue for you then go with Costa. Ship Details: Ship Quality Very clean and comfortable. We loved our room with a balcony. My travel partner was in heaven on the balcony and spent 2 nights dining there ordering room service instead of going to the formal dinners. Dining/Food Food was very good, come of it excellent, some of it so-so. I missed having 1/2 and 1/2 cream for my coffee in the mornings; they offer hot milk but it's skim milk I think. On the last 2 days we ordered Americanos from the ship deck bar which were wonderfu. By the way, water and other extras were very affordable we thought. Stateroom Quality Loved the balcony. Room was very clean. We had a problem with our plumbing and they sent someone to fix it even before we reported it. Our room steward must have noticed. Once they came, the problem was gone. Great service. The beds were incredibly comfortable, a wonderful mattress and cozy comforter which made all the difference to me. Ship Staff Quality The ship staff were wonderful. We had one bad moment with one particular crew staff and that was it. We reported that person on our final review and hopefully he will not be with Costa long as it was apparent he did not fit in with the typical Costa employee. Entertainment & Activities We missed quite a few of the activities because we wanted to be as fresh as possible for our excursions. I wish the disco dancing started a little earlier as I would have loved that but 12 midnight is too late.
